Hello, friends.

Julie J. [00:00:23]:
So my dad passed away in 2015.

Julie J. [00:00:26]:
We weren’t talking and it took a month for his family to track me down. Before I ever knew he was gone, I started hearing from him in heaven. It consumed me. How is communication with the other side even possible? I left my corporate gig, studied with spiritual teachers on every coast, and worked with my angels to figure out the answers. Today, my mission is teaching you how to raise your vibration, shift your thoughts, trust your intuition, develop your unique spiritual gifts, and connect with your loved ones and angels on the other side. Friends, when you have these tools, life really does become heaven on earth.

Julie J. [00:01:18]:
Hello, beautiful souls. Welcome back to the Angels and Awakening podcast. I’m your host and author, Julie Janses. Friends, today we have on Sunita Alizada. I didn’t pronounce that right.

Sonita A. [00:01:30]:
No, it was great. Yeah, perfect.

Julie J. [00:01:35]:
She’s an award winning rapper, activist and author from Afghanistan who uses her voice to fight against child marriage and advocate for girls rights. Her viral song Daughters for Sale brought international attention to her story and struggles of millions of girls worldwide. She’s spoken at the United nations, collaborated with artists like Shawn Mendez, and co created a curriculum on child marriage used in 15 countries. Her upcoming memoir, published by Harper Collins, weaves powerful journey with music to inspire change. Oh my goodness. Sonita, thank you so much for being here.

Sonita A. [00:02:19]:
Thank you. Thank you, Julie, for having me.

Julie J. [00:02:22]:
Your story is so powerful and I don’t know how to dive in because it’s just gut wrenching.

Sonita A. [00:02:31]:
It’s hard for me too because sometimes I’m just confused where to start, honestly, because if you let me start it, it’s gonna take hours. So I usually start by telling people where I’m from. I’m from Afghanistan. I was born under the Taliban regime and soon after the Taliban took over because of po and insecurity, my family had to flee the country to go to Iran, where we thought living would be easier. So many Afghans did the same thing. We thought this would be the best option for us. We sold everything that we had. We left Afghanistan, the only place we knew to go to Iran.

Sonita A. [00:03:19]:
When we arrived, life seemed okay.

Julie J. [00:03:23]:
Yeah.

Sonita A. [00:03:24]:
But after a while, it got so hard that for me, especially because I wanted. I was a child, maybe around five or six years old, I wanted to have friends. The first thing I wanted to have was to have fun, you know, live my childhood. Because I couldn’t do it in Afghanistan. I wanted to do it in Iran. But then the kids in Iran, they were. Some of them were brainwashed. They thought Afghans are people who are dirty, who are pro war, all the negative things that parents could taught their kids.

Sonita A. [00:04:02]:
And that’s why I never had Iranian childhood friends. And then I gave up on that for a while. I started to look for a school, which became my ultimate dream, to sit in a classroom with other Iranian kids, to learn, first of all, how to read and write my name. But on each door I knocked, they turned me back, saying that Afghans aren’t allowed. But I was lucky that a woman, Iranian woman, she took me to a mosque and we started to learn alphabetical Parsi Alphabet. In that mosque, every time people would come to pray, we would act like we were there to pray, to read the Quran. But whenever they would leave, we would put our religious books away, and then we would start learning. And yeah, the lady was at risk, so she had to play this game not to be caught by the Iranian government.

Sonita A. [00:05:10]:
That went on for a long time. And then I. I went to Tehran, where I found an NGO that provided basic education to young, undocumented Afghan refugees like me. And then it was there. Everything started there. I made friends. I’m going to go on. If you have a question, you stop me.

Julie J. [00:05:33]:
No, no, I want you to go on. My manager just got out of a big meeting for me, and so he. He texted, call me. And I’ve got, like, it silenced, but it went through anyway. So I’m just going to text him back, call him in, in an hour.

Sonita A. [00:05:50]:
I.

Julie J. [00:05:51]:
We have to keep going, though, because I feel like this woman was your angel. Like, I feel like it was such a earth angel.

Sonita A. [00:05:59]:
Not just one bad. That’s the thing. So when I went to the ngo, all those teachers, they actually became the sole support for me. So after a while, when my mom came to Iran to take me back to Afghanistan to get married for the second time, because the first time was when I was 10 years old. It didn’t go through. But then at age 15 or 16, I didn’t want to be a bride. It was. I completely lost the interest in being a bride at such a young age because I had new dreams and goals for myself.

Sonita A. [00:06:40]:
And. And then when my mom said that, I asked Roxar, who is an Iranian filmmaker who was also following me with her camera for three years, to document My life as a refugee in Iran. Then the whole story turned out to be about child marriage because of what was going on with me. And also in the classroom where I was. Every time I saw my friends with bruises on their faces, I knew it was because of child marriage and all the pressure on me. And so many things were happening at the same time. I felt like I was being choked. I just wanted to find a way to express myself.

Sonita A. [00:07:28]:
Then I heard Eminem rapping and I, I didn’t know him, I just, I couldn’t speak English. So I felt his anger and I was feeling the same. Then I took rap as a tool to write.

Julie J. [00:07:47]:
Amazing. I want to go back to this because I feel like in the United States we’re so uneducated and so ignorant to the fact that these things are occurring within the world. I have a 14 year old daughter who just yesterday graduated from 8th grade and she doesn’t even care to look at boys yet. Like she is just on her own path and she loves theater and acting and it, it like makes me just want to cry thinking that there are women, girls within the world at 10 years old that are being forced into these marriages. Why, like, can you explain to the audience like what is happening? Is it, is it simply like the poverty? What are the circumstances of why girls so young are being married off?

Sonita A. [00:08:49]:
It can be different for different countries, but in Afghanistan, where I come from, it’s mostly because of poverty and also lack of education. Parents, they think the best way to protect their, their daughters is to give it. Yeah, give them to a man to take care of them. And in other countries, also in Afghanistan, it’s a long lived tradition that they practice for religious beliefs or other reasons. And it’s happening around the world. Even in the U.S. in Utah, Florida, you can find child marriage survivors. So it’s around the world there are 12 million girls every year being sold, forced into marriage.

Sonita A. [00:09:42]:
And the reason why it’s happening, besides tradition, poverty, education, lack of education, is also because of, some people are very selfish and careless about what’s going on in other part of the world. When I came to the US I was so disappointed to see children my age complaining about going to school. Something that I killed myself just to have it. So the education system and how they grow up, it’s basically keeping them in one bubble, not knowing what they’re missing or not knowing what, what they have is someone else’s dream in another part of the world or what they have, they could use it to be someone else’s voice. For example, in Afghanistan today, Afghanistan is the only country in the world that women, girls are not allowed to go to school. You don’t see many people questioning it, why girls are not allowed to go to school. Because this is a dangerous thing. And in the world we are going to see the effect of it, you know, in the long term.

Sonita A. [00:10:54]:
And like Covid, how it happened in one corner of the world and then spread out. Illiteracy also is a disease and can really raise people that it’s not their fault. They just don’t know how to deal with problems or how to respect human rights. So this is what we are ignoring right now. We are ignoring the rights of Afghan women, the rights of children and the rights of it to education, which is so important to everyone.

Julie J. [00:11:30]:
Yeah. So were you married then? As a 15 year old, I guess.

Sonita A. [00:11:37]:
I was the luckiest one that each time I escaped. The first time I wanted to get married, I was 10 years old. I was so excited. Excited actually, because I got new shoes, I got clothing. I got so much attention that without being a bride, you couldn’t get it. And at age, at age 10, it fell through for different reasons. And then we had to leave Afghanistan because of war. So that didn’t happen at age 15 or 16.

Sonita A. [00:12:11]:
It was going to happen if I wouldn’t stand up for myself.

Julie J. [00:12:16]:
How did you stand up for yourself?

Sonita A. [00:12:19]:
Basically standing up to my family, who I loved and loved the most. And also just seeing the reality. The reality for me was to give up and follow the crowd or just risk whatever was left for me and follow my dreams, which I did.

Julie J. [00:12:39]:
How did you manage to come over to the United States? How did that happen?

Sonita A. [00:12:48]:
So when I found rap music, I started creating my rap song with the help of Roxara. It’s called Daughters for Self. It’s the story of me experiencing child marriage, going through that process and then the story of my friends. One of them was about 15 years old and she was engaged with a man who was 35 years old. So. And one of them got married. She had bruises on her face and I had that image in my music video. I was in the music video.

Sonita A. [00:13:27]:
I wear a wedding dress, but my face is all bruised. So there is no happiness in that music video and my voice and lyrics. And suddenly that song traveled across borders and people in the US heard me. And a lady named Corey Stern, she contacted me and Rohsara to let me know I got a full scholarship to Wasatch Academy in Utah.

Julie J. [00:13:57]:
Wow, that’s incredible. I believe that for so many people and with a rightful mind. Going through what you did and going through hardships like this in life can make somebody feel like, you know, if religious people are saying this, and this is what religion is, a lot of people turn away from God or believing in a God in general. How did what you experience impact your faith and your beliefs? Beautiful souls.

Julie J. [00:14:35]:
This has been one of the hardest years and we’re still kind of in.

Julie J. [00:14:40]:
The thick of it.

Julie J. [00:14:41]:

Julie J. [00:17:35]:
Thank you, thank you.

Julie J. [00:17:37]:
Now back to the.

Sonita A. [00:17:41]:
So people are allowed to, you know, choose whatever they want to believe in. For me, I try to find what I mostly feel like in peace with, and it’s creating music. You can say my religion is music, family, friends. So I don’t really want to say I have one God, because that’s not the truth. I used to be a very strict Muslim. But having the opportunity to really explore yourself, first of all, to know who you are, what you want, what you believe in, it can help a lot. But it’s the laziness of some people to blame everything on religion or politics because they can question it. If you blame everything on, say, Islam, you won’t change anything.

Sonita A. [00:18:38]:
If you are putting your finger on that, you also have to continue fighting for that so you can save at least one life. Because this is what Roxara did. She invested in me, and I am where I am today, where I wanted to be. And now I’m using my voice and my music to fight for someone else. If people around the world, they can feel like this, that they’re human and they can support one another, because without supporting each other, this is not going to last for a long time. Peace, love, whatever we have. So we have to give away some of the peace and happiness that we have to share with others. So I hope that when they hear this or when they read my story, know that in all part of the world, in around the world, there is always like, you know, something going on, something sad.

Sonita A. [00:19:40]:
But there’s also hope, especially in Afghanistan, there are secret schools going on. When you think about that, you should be so happy and positive about Afghan women. The fact that the Taliban are in power, but they still go to school in sacred school. This tells you something about women and their power. They have hope. They’re surrounded with darkness, but there’s like a little candle still burning in their heart. And I hope this is the same for people who hear us.

Julie J. [00:20:19]:
How can people help? There are people here with means who are listening, who want to help. How can they help? Because you think of 12 million children, that’s like 3 Chicago’s worth of people, girls who are being married off every year.

Sonita A. [00:20:42]:
I would say the first thing that I always wanted people to do was not to tell me, oh, I’m sorry. What happened to you, what you went through? I don’t want to hear that. I want you to do something. And that doesn’t mean you have to give away your life to take action. It can be as simple as writing. I know it’s. Maybe rap is not your tool. You could write a letter to your government.

Sonita A. [00:21:15]:
You could support a girl with their education in Afghanistan so they’re not going to be left out of school. Because once you have no educational services, you’re easily. You’re accessible for people to brainwash you. And if they want to do more, they can always participate, you know, in events related to child marriage and learn about. Because each ngo, they have different way to solve a problem. Most of them, they say donate. This is also a good way to support because the donation sometimes goes to supporting girls or families.

Julie J. [00:22:04]:
I want. I was wondering if you would share a story or reading from your book that everybody can hear.

Sonita A. [00:22:14]:
I wasn’t ready for that.

Julie J. [00:22:16]:
That.

Julie J. [00:22:16]:
No, that’s okay. We could take that part out. No worries at all. You know, one of the things that I feel that the angels say is that we get signs all the time. Sometimes we get signs from the other side and rainbows, other earth angels as people. But I think that one of the biggest signs that we don’t talk about is the, the joy that we feel within ourselves. That when we feel this level of joy or passion, it’s really our soul self calling to us to follow that forward in life. And I’m so glad that you talked about Eminem.

Julie J. [00:23:00]:
When I was young and I was really feeling angry about my parents divorce, my mom would be like, why do you listen to Eminem all the time? And I just resonated with the anger that he had within him and getting it out. But you found rap that way. And your joy led you forward in your life, but you had to choose to follow that joy. How did you find the courage to be so courageous in that situation, to turn away from your family and everything that you ever knew to follow that joy within yourself?

Sonita A. [00:23:41]:
I think when you are in between like two choices and they’re so obvious, you don’t really need much of courage. You just have to, you know, see through each option that you have. As I told you, the two options that I had, one was to stay with my family, get married, and be a proper Afghan girl, which meant being a woman at age 15, having children. Or I could be a bad girl and just follow my dreams and starting rapping. And, but that was so risky, not only because I’m. I was Muslim, I am Muslim, I don’t know. And music is haram. And also my family, they were very conservative.

Sonita A. [00:24:39]:
Plus I was in Iran, which music is banned for women. It’s illegal. But I needed to find that joy. Without that, I knew I didn’t want to live. If I would choose the first option, there was no reason for me to really wake up the next morning. So I wanted to risk whatever I had to just live with hope, with my dreams, and find joy in everyday living.

Julie J. [00:25:12]:
There’s a lot of glorification right now of like Dubai and you know, as the United States has been experiencing a lot of turbulence over the last six months and not following the Constitution, there’s been a lot of clients that I’ve talked to about wondering if the United States is really the best place to be. And they’re looking at different places around the world. Dubai is one that I’ve heard, but they still allow. I want to say it wasn’t until the early 2000s or 2019 when honor killings of men killing their wives became even illegal. What is it that American women could better understand about the lack of rights that women have in the Middle East?

Sonita A. [00:26:11]:
The first thing that women like in the U.S. for example, they see or they call as a human rights is the right to wear a hijab or not. If they see a woman is with a scarf, they think all her rights is taken away. They don’t know it’s more than that. It’s about not having access to education, not having the choice to marry or not marry, and many different issues that’s happening around the world. And I think again, it’s about sharing information in the U.S. for example, when I came to the U.S. i was sharing my story about being sold into marriage.

Sonita A. [00:27:05]:
Everyone would come to me and ask, did this really happen to you? And when they would watch my documentary, they would ask me if this was a film fiction. So many issues are still unknown for them. If you don’t know what issue is happening in certain countries, you don’t really know how to help. So the first thing that they can do is to educate themselves. And you can really educate someone about an issue if they don’t first of all initiate the act to just learn about it or try to support.

Julie J. [00:27:45]:
Yeah. When it comes to the United States, you said it’s happening here, it’s happening all over in the United States as well. How. How is that possible? Like, how is that happening? And. And it’s not nothing’s being done about it.

Sonita A. [00:28:04]:
I wish I knew the answer, but when I asked them, some of my friends in Utah, they said it happens because they’re Mormons and you cannot do anything. They have the right to practice their religion, but it’s about children’s rights.

Julie J. [00:28:26]:
Yeah.

Sonita A. [00:28:27]:
And I don’t know how people gonna deal with that. But you know Mormons, it sounds very hard, but again, you have to start somewhere. If you, for us in Iran, Afghanistan, the US sounds like a dreamland. Only you understand it when you come here that this is not where you thought or you were told because you see this issue is going on. And the government, I feel like they know it, but they don’t bother to solve it because people, parents are okay with it, but they never know how kids are feeling and how that can really affect their childhood and their future. And I’ve seen several child marriage survivors from Florida. It was devastating. Close to what I’ve heard from Iran and Afghanistan.

Sonita A. [00:29:29]:
And they usually say that the lack of support from people and from government, it makes it go unnoticeable. So that’s why it’s still going on.

Julie J. [00:29:43]:
I liked how you said earlier that sometimes in life we have to give up a piece of our own peace and ease within ourselves in order to do something good in the world. Because in order to educate ourselves doesn’t feel good to hear about all of these things. But when I was growing up in the 80s and the 90s in the US we just had newspapers and you turn on the five o’ clock news at night and you really had a solid journalistic system that was providing accurate news that you could rely on within the world. And we just don’t have that anymore. It’s so completely diluted. And I, I believe what you’re saying and I see the angels saying it all the time too. We have to choose to give up part of their peace, part of our ease in order to educate ourselves, look at different news from various different sources that are reputable and really understand what’s happening within the world. Because, you know, I see so often other people default to like other generations, like, well, what can I do? I’m just one person or what can I do? I, I don’t have that years left.

Julie J. [00:31:08]:
What difference could I really make? But I think that if we all changed that thinking and said I’m one person and I can shift things, and my being educated about this and helping and just doing something to help others in this world, I think it could create a huge difference and ripple effect. You’re great proof. I mean, your one song transforms so many lives by just bringing awareness to.

Sonita A. [00:31:37]:
This and we can talk about what is going on in Iran. You know, it wasn’t just one person, but two or three, whatever started this movement. The right to choose their hijab. And today you see women wearing what they like to. They can wear hijab or they don’t need to. I mean, they have to. But they, they dare not to wear a hijab because they know other people are doing the same thing or standing for the same mission. And it’s always about one person starting it and other people, if they care enough, they can join.

Sonita A. [00:32:24]:
And this is when one finger becomes a fist, you know?

Julie J. [00:32:30]:
Yeah.

Sonita A. [00:32:31]:
Like my song you mentioned, I. I really didn’t think I was going to continue rap. I did it for myself, for my friends. And then it became like an anthem for, you know, ending child marriage. You always have to start somewhere. If the mission that you’re fighting for, it’s from truly from your heart.

Julie J. [00:32:55]:
Yeah.

Sonita A. [00:32:55]:
You will find people to follow your mission.

Julie J. [00:32:59]:
Absolutely. That pure intention.

Sonita A. [00:33:02]:
Exactly.

Julie J. [00:33:05]:
Tell everyone where they can find you, where they can find your book and all your great work.

Sonita A. [00:33:13]:
Thank you. So they can find me on Instagram, Sonita alizada or on YouTube and my website, sonita.net. they can purchase or pre order the book using the website. In this book, Sonita, they will find photos of me, my family, plus stories from my childhood until now. And also they will have music pieces to listen to, which is very exciting for me. I wanted to write four pieces for this for four chapters in this book. So I’m very excited for people to listen to my music and I hope they like and I hope the story can inspire them.

Julie J. [00:34:04]:
Amazing. Thank you so much for all of the beautiful work that you’re doing in the world. And yes, I hope everybody supports you by buying the book. Thank you so much for your beautiful heart.

Sonita A. [00:34:17]:
Thank you. Take care, Julie. Bye bye bye.

Julie J. [00:34:21]:
Thank you.

Sonita A. [00:34:22]:
Thank you beautiful souls.

Sign up on my website to receive a weekly message of love, hope and healing from the angels. Do you have a prayer request? Go to the homepage of my website and submit your prayer request so that our team of prayer warriors can be praying for you daily. Want to learn more about the angels and energy healing? Subscribe to my YouTube channel called Julie Jancis to learn more about the angels, energy, healing techniques and so much more. One of the biggest things we hear from our listeners is that they have no one to talk to about their spiritual awakening. We created a private Facebook group called the Angels and Awakening Podcast Tribe so that you could connect with others like you and know that you’re not alone. So be sure to join this group on Facebook to get the support you need. Want a free session? We plan to give away over 240 free sessions with students in the Angel School per year to win a free session.

Subscribe and rate this podcast five stars. Then write a positive review and email us a screenshot. That way we know who to contact when you win. Want to share your uplifting angel story on the podcast? Because we love sharing them, please write down your angel story and email it to us. Don’t forget, be an angel and share this podcast with someone who needs it. See you back here next time for another episode of the Angels and Awakening Podcast. Friends, before we go, I want you to take a deep breath in. Deep breath out.

Julie J. [00:36:30]:
Again. Deep breath inhaling the pure white light and love of God making you feel weightless and filled with joy. And I want you to exhale all of the heaviness that you’ve been carrying in your Auric field, in your chakras, in your body. Friends, no matter where you are in your life, your angels need you to know that you are so, so loved. Never doubt that you have big, big purpose here and now. What is your soul here to do? My friends, your spirit team is always working with you. I want you to see and feel your heart chakra and your heart itself opening like French doors. I want you to see God and your spirit team sending you a multitude of blessings of abundance in health, wealth, happiness, love and peace.

Julie J. [00:37:36]:
See all of those unexpected blessings filling your heart right now. My friends. Your soul is love, joy, peace, bliss, ease and grace. And because that’s who and what you truly are, these elements can never leave you. They can never be taken away from you. And my friends, all you really ever have to do is just be be you and radiate the beautiful light that you are. So go forth today and be an angel in the lives of others. Radiate your and live in the high vibration of simply being.
