Let’s see what messages they have for you in today’s show. Hello beautiful souls.

Julie Jancis [00:01:39]:

Welcome back to the Angels and Awakening podcast. I’m your host and author Julie Jancis and friends. Today we have the authors of Take the Wheel. It’s a new book that’s out by Tommy Stuffel  and Bryan Bernard. Tommy and Bryan, welcome and thank you so much for giving us an hour and spending this time with us.

Bryan Bernard [00:01:59]:

Thank you.

Tommy Stuffel [00:02:00]:

Thank you Julie. Thanks for having us on board.

Julie Jancis [00:02:02]:

Yeah, so I think your website is off road monks and I want to know everything about how you two came together and just tell everybody who you are to begin with.

Tommy Stuffel [00:02:15]:

This is Tommy and I’ll get the ball rolling here how we came together. I’m going to go back into history back to Tommy version 2005 where to Tommy was over busy in his head, was in a habit of drinking the head quiet every night and then at 3am when the alcohol wore off brain would just start talking again and chattering and wake me up at 3 o’clock every morning to the point that that was unsustainable Life was good. Everything else on the outside looked good. I had a good job, had a good home, had all that nice stuff. And I’ll come back to the details of what happened, but basically I had a bit of a breakdown. Fast forward some years later. I’ve done a lot of work to kind of pull myself up out of the trenches and to brush myself off and to get myself into a more peaceful headspace. And I was sharing that through Jeeping, through four wheeling, through off roading is something that I do.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:03:12]:

And I was noticing that when we were out there in a jeep, in a vehicle. And these are the big ones you see on the road with the big tires and the big bumpers and all that stuff. And we’re using these vehicles to help people pay attention to the moment, to just focus their attention, to be very mindful. And I watched a grown man cure himself of adhd because his brain used to be scattered and jumping all over the place. And he practiced mindfulness practices which are proven to heal adhd. It’s also proven to heal ptsd. Mindfulness practices are. And this became a mindfulness practice that he did over and over again.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:03:52]:

And it rewired his brain. And so I was doing that, offering classes of teaching people in the LA area how to get up out of the crazy rat race of the city and to have just at least a day of what we’ll come to talk about here, of a green zone experience of being in a peaceful, mindful present place. And then, Bryan, you kind of came into one of the very first event that we had back in 2017.

Bryan Bernard [00:04:18]:

Yeah, in 2017 is when I met Tommy. I was actually in a very dark place, quite a deep depression. And I don’t mean just a little period of sadness, I mean a deep, like clinical depression. And I wasn’t just on the floor. I was like in the cellar, beneath the basement, underneath the secret trap door of down there on the floor. So any of your listeners ever been in that dark place? It’s pretty dark down there. And that’s when I met, met Tommy in 2017 at his very first Zen Jeeping event. And just that one day made a big difference in my life to get me out of all the, the fears and worries and anxieties that were in my head and just kind of bring me into the moment, have me focus on something other than all of that other noise.

Bryan Bernard [00:05:03]:

And then Tommy and I, our friendship kind of just grew steadily over the years. And Tommy had shared with me these different things he had learned and I shared with him some things I’ve picked up along the way. And over the course of. What was it, a couple years, we kind of put together what is now in this book, Take the Wheel.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:05:25]:

That’s what’s there. Somewhere along the way, somebody else who came on one of our jeeping outings, that was a very intentional jeeping outing to help people overcome obstacles. And we can talk about that later or whenever it happens. He came back to us a couple months later at a campsite, a jeep in camp. We were camping for the weekend and he said, you ever thought about making a TV show about this? I’m like, yeah, we have. And so they went and he found a. He had a producer that he’d been working with before. And we made a pilot episode.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:05:58]:

And the pilot episode was there. We have people out in the woods in their vehicles, being mindful, experiencing all that present moment, beauty and wonder and some magic that happens there. And realized that we couldn’t call it Zen jeeping because of the jeep word, because there’s a company that owns that model. So our producer and director came back and said, how would you guys feel about calling yourselves off road monks?

Julie Jancis [00:06:24]:

It’s beautiful.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:06:26]:

So that’s where that comes from. And it makes people’s head go, what?

Julie Jancis [00:06:30]:

Well, and take the wheel. The name of your book is just such a strong title as well. I know what that means to me, but I’d love to hear from both of you. Tommy, I’ll start over with you. I had an experience this summer where we were just celebrating over a weekend, family and life. And my dad used to always say, when I was young, you know, don’t drink just because other people are drinking. Like, if you want to have a drink, drink something because you enjoy the taste of it. And that’s always just really resonated with me.

Julie Jancis [00:07:04]:

I’m not a big alcohol person. I’m very highly sensitive. I can’t do caffeine. I can’t do a lot of things because my body is just so sensitive. Sensitive to. To it. But just having a glass each night for like four nights in a row, celebrating with everyone. I started to feel a lower energy after a couple of days.

Julie Jancis [00:07:30]:

And I was like, what is going on? What is. I’m not happy bubbly, Julie. Like, I am feeling really, really down. And my angels came in and said, it’s the alcohol. Like, it really, really shifts your vibration. Just like, I wondered if you could talk about that a little bit and then transition to what Take the wheel means to you. And then we can move over to Bryan as well.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:07:56]:

Beautiful question. Thanks for sharing your experience. And yes, it’s all about vibration. It’s all about the energy. And that’s exactly what this book is all about. So I’ll back up to the point. Back in 2005, when I’m. My brain is overloaded, overstressed, overwhelmed, and it starts behaving and behaving.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:08:15]:

I’ll make that word up right now. I check myself into the hospital and they put you in the psych ward back then for, for two weeks. That was just the standard routine back then. And so, so I wake up in the morning in this hospital room and, and I volunteered to come here because something wasn’t right and I didn’t know what it was. And when I went to sleep the night before, there was nobody in the bed next to me. There’s an empty bed there. I woke up in the morning and there’s somebody in the bed, maybe a 35 year old guy. And I look and he’s, he’s strapped to the bed.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:08:47]:

He’s like strapped down in leather straps. I’m like, I only thought this happened in movies. And then I looked a little closer and the man had bandages under his wrist and under his wrist straps. So somewhere in the last eight hours since I came here into this room, this young man, something in his brain had helped him decide that his life wasn’t worth living. And he attempted something, part of him attempted to, and that life. And I’m laying here, I’m going, I said out loud. And it wasn’t out loud, but it was, you know, as out loud as you can get in a, in a quiet room. I go, what the fuck am I doing here?

Julie Jancis [00:09:27]:

Yeah.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:09:28]:

And, and, and this is where the answer just came. And the answer was just there and wherever it came from. Don’t know, inside of me, around me, from wherever. And it said, you’re here to learn. This is your education. You’re here on this earth to know, understand what goes on inside the mind of a person that gets them overstressed, overwhelmed. They snap, they lose it. We can’t think straight.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:09:51]:

Figure this out, Tommy. This is why you’re here. So I’m like, I’m like, okay, message taken. Assignment grant taken. That’s what I’m going to do. Then I had the next question. I’m like, okay, what’s the difference between me, why am I here and why is somebody else walking down the street outside the hospital right now, free? And that is when this image kind of just showed up on the wall in front of me like a slideshow does. And it was a very simple.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:10:19]:

A green box at the bottom, a yellow box stacked on top of that, and a red box stacked on top of that. And that instantly became an answer to how much noise do you have in your head? Because how much noise you have in your head directly relates to your inner peace, your. Your ability to sleep at night, the stress levels in your life, the amount of distraction you have in your life. Everything that ails mankind that is in our heads is kind of consumed up in this word chatter. And I knew instantly that I was living up in that yellow high, in that yellow zone, had a lot of stresses, had a lot of worries, had a lot of stuff going on, had a lot of things to handle. And. And it didn’t take long to push me into that red zone. And a mind can’t sustain a red zone state of mind for long.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:11:09]:

And it’s like the teacup is full and you’re still pouring tea into it. It’s overflowing. It can’t take anymore. I’ve had it up to here. And that instant understanding and knowing came to me that morning in the hospital room. So we’ll get into the energy of it because your question is spot on. And it’s brilliant vibration and stuff like that. And we’ll talk about how this chatter is a lower vibration energy.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:11:33]:

It’s a lower vibration thought process or thoughts. And it brings our energy down in general. But before I get into. We get into that. Bryan, anything you want to pitch in there?

Bryan Bernard [00:11:45]:

Well, maybe. Maybe talk about.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:11:47]:

Maybe talk about the title, like where that came from.

Bryan Bernard [00:11:49]:

The Take the Wheel title is intentional. It’s very empowering. It encourages the reader, as we do throughout the entire book, to help them understand that they have more control over their lives than maybe they think they do. And the book is not there to give them answers. The book is there to help them find their answers to their questions. Because when you’re dealing with fundamental life force issues that are deep within you, it’s pretty rare for someone else’s answers to be your answers. So it’s better if each person can find their own answer. So we help the reader do that.

Bryan Bernard [00:12:26]:

We help them quiet that noise that Tommy’s talking about that we all have. We all have that voice in our head that just goes 24 hours a day. And we’re always talking to it or listening to it or telling it to shut up. And if we can quiet that noise a little bit, then you can hear better. Your own answers to your own questions. Not our questions, not our answers, not somebody else’s. Not that those aren’t worth listening to, because input from others can always help you, usually help you. But it’s best if you can quiet the noise so you can ask the questions that matter to you and then have enough quiet in your head to hear the answers to those questions.

Bryan Bernard [00:13:05]:

That’s the most empowering thing. And that’s what Take the Wheel’s about.

Julie Jancis [00:13:08]:

Absolutely. Bryan. I’m curious, Tommy, self described as add. I’m definitely adhd. Are you on the spectrum there at all with the ADD or adhd?

Bryan Bernard [00:13:20]:

Well, I’ve been diagnosed with every, every three and four letter acronym in the DSM at one point in my life. So I have a long list sitting over here. To be honest with you, none of it really applied. Which was why when I did traditional talk therapy and some of the more established modalities and things like that, they helped a little bit around the edges. And I encourage people to do those, to explore them and learn. But they’re quick to diagnose and give you a little label like that, mainly for insurance reasons. But none of them really applied to me. I was kind of a mismatch maybe of everything.

Bryan Bernard [00:14:01]:

So when I came across these mindfulness practices and becoming aware of the noise in my head and doing some root cause analysis to see where it came from and you, I learned that a lot of it isn’t necessarily me. A lot of it’s imposed by others from outside me. Expectations from society in general or people close to you. I had a lot.

Julie Jancis [00:14:24]:

Yeah, that I said bingo. And that’s why I’m asking is because, you know, I’m always looking to associate for the reader how this episode applies to them. And the angels just kind of always guide who needs to be on when. But one of the things that I’m seeing within society as we’re sitting here towards the end of 2020, is a lot of clients experiencing things with their high school daughters and sons where they have ADD or adhd, their high school brain. And, you know, these are just young kids who are starting to come into an adult body, but their heads are going a million different places. And so working with these clients has brought me back recently to being a kid myself. And I’m going to tie this into your book because people, people back then in like 1996, 20, you know, 2000 would be like, just take responsibility. Why are you forgetting to do your homework? You know, why are you forgetting to study for this test? Why Are you forgetting to do all of your stuff? Just take responsibility? And it was like, what does that mean? Tell me, break it down.

Julie Jancis [00:15:38]:

How do I take responsibility? And I think that’s a lot of what you’re talking about right now, because if you let this just keep going and you don’t figure it out for yourself, we all get to that point. And, Tommy, I just wanted to kind of. I don’t know if the right words commiserate with you for a second, but I found myself in the exact same position when my dad passed away, and I started hearing from him before I knew he was gone. It just kind of led me to a dark night of the soul and landed me in the hospital psychiatric section, where everything is stripped away from you for an entire week. But what you’re talking about is really that you’ve broken down the process of how you take responsibility for your own mind and your own life, and you come back to the heart of who you are and find your way forward. And so I think a lot of mamas that I know of who are going to be listening to this podcast who is like, holy cow, I have Tommy or Bryan, you know, when they were in their high school years, and we could help them figure this out now for. For that age group so that they can kind of get on the right path earlier. How do you go and what.

Julie Jancis [00:17:00]:

What is the first step that you found from that point of, okay, life is out of control. You know, I. My mind is going 100 miles a minute. I need tools to slow it down. In this dark night of the soul, where do we go first?

Tommy Stuffel  [00:17:21]:

I’ll take you there after we say book number two. Take the wheel for teens.

Julie Jancis [00:17:26]:

Yes.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:17:27]:

Right. Because. Because everything in here that Bryan and I can talk about can be translated into anybody’s language for any person, for any situation. It’s so. It’s like. It’s like the flour, the. The milk, the eggs, to make any sort of dough you want, and you can make any sort of dough out of this, any sort of product out of this. So thanks for bringing that around.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:17:48]:

So early in the book and early in this class, when I used to teach it in my living room, I look at everybody and said, has anybody ever held a bad baby? If you’ve really held a living baby, there’s nothing bad there. It’s all just brilliant energy, right? Just. Just interest and curiosity and love and Gaga and just the energy of a baby is just what it is. It’s just brilliant life force energy radiating out that radiant life force Energy radiating out of that baby is in every one of us. It doesn’t go away. It doesn’t diminish over time. It can’t diminish over time. It’s infinite and it’s forever.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:18:34]:

It’s the energy of God, universe, source, and it’s there. What happens is over time, it gets covered up, it gets, you know, put down, it gets shoved away. It gets, you know, boxed in. And yeah, what we’ve done here in, in the book is step by step, given us kind of seven flavors of how. Of shapes of boxes and, and how to look at those boxes objectively and start to understand them and then give you tools to, to start to dismantle those bo. Then what’s left is you. You’re there. You don’t have to learn how to be a bright, brilliant Julie again.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:19:13]:

You just have to stop lowering your vibration.

Julie Jancis [00:19:16]:

Right?

Tommy Stuffel  [00:19:16]:

You’re. That. You’re naturally. That. You know what the natural that baby energy is because you exude it. You’re. When we see you, when I saw you first show you on your podcast and on your computer, on your, on your. On your website, I’m like, wow, bright light.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:19:29]:

There she is. Brilliant, shining. And. And it’s. And it’s. That’s the truth of all of us. All of us are that inside. So what happens? Yeah, we get chatter.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:19:41]:

Okay, that’s okay. Where does that come from? And it’s important to kind of, kind of root this root cause analysis. As Bryan said a little bit earlier, we’re born into it. We’re born into a society that is very controlling. Boxy, holds us in, puts us down. It’s. There’s a lot of behaviors in our society, and we’ll go through all seven of them here. Because that’s what you’re waiting for is to kind of hear, what are the seven magic tricks to getting out of hell? And that’s just what it is.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:20:17]:

So we’re born into it. So the awesome news here is that it’s not your fault, it’s nobody’s fault. It wasn’t my fault that I had to go and hospitalize myself. It wasn’t anybody’s fault that you get to this severe state of depression. Depression. It’s not like you wake up one day and say, I want to be a little shittier today than I was yesterday. I want to feel a little more sad today than I did yesterday. Right.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:20:40]:

That doesn’t happen.

Julie Jancis [00:20:41]:

Yeah.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:20:42]:

So what is it? Well, as simple as Bryan and I can figure it out and other teachers, we’re not making this stuff up. This is going from ancient teachings too of how this kind of noise in our head comes to be and what it looks like. That’s what we’re here. That’s what we’re here to expose. We’re here to expose the truth of what keeps us down, what keeps us dull, what keeps us sad and depressed. And part of one more thing, part of this society that we’re living in. We’re set up as takers. We’re kind of in this taking mentality and that maybe came from a portion of the planet, the residents on the planet that were survival of the fittest mode and they were having to kill or be killed.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:21:28]:

But while that was happening, there were other societies on this planet that were living in community with each other and living in harmony with each other and living in balance with nature. So we know that it’s possible. And science has shown that we’re more communal based people than we are these separate antagonists that we become. And that’s good news too, because these are all habits that have been formed over time. And therefore, if they’re things that are put on top of our natural self, our natural self is this bright energy of wanting to commune and be in contact with others and be, you know, in harmony and in balance, then we just need to find out what’s blocking that and then remove those blocks or those bricks on the wall, as sometimes they’re called.

Julie Jancis [00:22:13]:

Bryan Bernard [00:24:26]:

I want to go back to Tommy’s bright shiny baby because one of the things we do in the book is to help people rediscover that and uncover it. Because Tommy’s right, it just gets covered up by all the labels that get put on you. Starting at a very young age. You get labeled as the funny one or the cute one or the smart one or the athletic one, or you know, the one that can’t spell or the one that can’t do this or you know, anyway, we get all these labels left on and that continues teen years, of course, into your work years, you get pigeonholed and you limited. So we help people uncover that, that inner part of themselves that is still there that has been maybe covered up, painted over with many coats of lacquer. And in the book we say you can use any words you want, but we called it because we had to choose a term for the book and we called it your inner sage. Your listeners might prefer the term inner angel and that works beautifully. So when they read the book and they see that part where we introduce, reintroduce that part of themselves to themselves, maybe inner angel is the best word for your listeners.

Bryan Bernard [00:25:36]:

Love it and it helps them explore that and rediscover that part of themselves. And then we encourage them to stay in touch with that and let that be more of a leading force in their life as opposed to your mind which is conditioned to think of yourself within those boxes. Tommy Stock talking about to live life more from your inner sage or your inner angel energy. And the way, one way to do that, whenever you’re trying to go anywhere in life, one way to go there is to get rid of what’s in your way. Because then going wherever you Want to go is way easier if there’s nothing in your way. So the last half of the book or so is helping people figure out what is in their way, what these boxes are, what these blocks are, and figure out their own, because theirs will be different than mine and they’re different than yours, et cetera. But help them figure out their own. And then they kind of, once they kind of see them for what they are, perhaps for the first time, they get to decide which ones they want to let go of and leave behind and that are no longer helping them.

Bryan Bernard [00:26:40]:

And maybe they still want to hang on to a few for whatever reason. Maybe they’re not ready to let that go yet. Or maybe it actually is helping them in some way that they want to continue to use for a while. It’s their choice, the reader’s choice. We’re not telling them, analyze this, make a list, and leave all that behind. No, the reader gets to decide because what’s best for them, they’re going to know from their inner angel.

Julie Jancis [00:27:00]:

I think that that’s so important because as we go through this life and we just keep leveling up with our consciousness, there are some things that some spiritual teachers might want to strip away, but they can be of use to the person at the time and the conscious level that they’re at. So can you tell everybody? Because I love the listene to just be able to take nuggets of wisdom home from every episode and just implement them into their own lives. What are those seven boxes? And are all the seven boxes actually blocks as well? Is that what you’re saying?

Tommy Stuffel  [00:27:39]:

Yeah. Bryan, you want to talk about blocks, boxes, and then I’ll get into a specific starting point.

Bryan Bernard [00:27:45]:

Yeah, why don’t we just go ahead and list the seven of them? One.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:27:49]:

Okay.

Bryan Bernard [00:27:50]:

But everybody’s going to have their own unique situations, of course. But we’ve put them into seven broad categories or boxes. And when you dive into, say like the first one is fear, everybody probably has fears. So what are your fears? And we help them figure out what are imagined fears and what are real fears. Yeah, because we tend to spin up many imagined fears in our lives, and those limit us and keep us stuck. We’re not telling people to ignore real danger, of course, but it’s the imagined fears that you need to take a closer look at, because you might be stuck and cemented in place in life because of an imagined fear. And you need to know that, because if you are, that’s valuable information because you can probably figure that out and just decide okay, that’s an imagine. When it’s not a real fear.

Bryan Bernard [00:28:50]:

It’s imagined. It came from. Either I made it up or it came from, you know, my mom when I was six, or wherever it came from. And you can decide for yourself. Okay. Now that I know what that is and it’s limiting my life, do I want it to continue to limit my life?

Tommy Stuffel  [00:29:08]:

And what you’ll find, Julie, what everyone will find when they do this is that we talk about the seven power centers, like this natural, radiant, brilliant energy and power that we can radiate as human beings. And then the seven blocks. So the first block that Bryan discussed very clearly is fear that everyone can relate to. What that fear limits or what that fear blocks or what that fear is an obstacle to is your feeling. And now we’re talking about leveling up consciousness. Right. There’s. There’s different levels of.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:29:42]:

Of energy in us. And the first one is, is. Is being grounded. It’s our root, and it’s feeling safe and it’s feeling secure, and it’s feeling like I’m not under attack.

Julie Jancis [00:29:55]:

Yeah.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:29:56]:

And a lot of times in life these days we’re. We’re blessed right here in the United States that. That most times we’re not under attack. We’re not under threat. We live in a pretty safe place. Our mind may make up stuff. We may watch TV and get scared about the border that, you know, and the other things that people imagine are going on. But when you get that noise out of your own head and you’re not.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:30:22]:

And you’re not so scared anymore because you can’t scare a frightened mind, then you’re grounded and you’re safe and you’re secure, and that energy. Right. You can feel.

Julie Jancis [00:30:33]:

Yeah.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:30:34]:

So that’s your first power center. That’s your. And that’s your root. And. And that’s your root chakra. Your root chakra is grounded, safe, part of the energy of everything. You’re part of the divine energy. And here we are.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:30:48]:

So that’s. That’s number one.

Julie Jancis [00:30:51]:

Yeah. Let’s go through and let’s name all of them the seven radiant centers and the seven blocks.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:30:58]:

All right, well, the next one. And radiant centers, I love that because that’s whatever they are. They’re wheels. They’re energy wheels. We call them power centers because again, we’re trying to be as innocuous as we can in the book. We’re trying not to tip anybody into. So we’re trying to come up with some very common terms, but we call them Power centers. And the second one is being content.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:31:22]:

Now you’re safe, right? The second one is being okay. And this Eckhart Tolle does a great job about being, talking about being content like the moment’s here, the moment’s happening, don’t fight it. You may want to be a little better tomorrow, you may want to have something else tomorrow. That’s okay. But what we get caught up in in this society, in this human race, in this racing, go get them next society are all these unmet desires or wants. Right? You watch a TV show and now you want that lifestyle and then they show you some illness that you might have and then you got to want that medicine to fix that illness that you don’t have to live the life that you see on tv. It’s pretty wacky. But if you just say these unmet wants and desires, everybody’s head can explode with their own set of them and how they change all the time.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:32:14]:

So how can you ever be content if your own source of like contentment and this kind of melds into happiness, Right? Content and happy, peaceful inside. How can you ever be content and peaceful and happy inside when you have all these changing, ever changing requirements jumping around out there? So that’s the second one is to kind of understand your, the wantings that we have, the desires that we have, the things we’ve picked up along the way because we talked, we were told we weren’t, you know, skinny enough. So now we’ve spent the last 30 years, you know, desiring to be something different, to be something that, you know, that somebody says we should be. And that’s, that’s, that box can be pretty entrapping.

Julie Jancis [00:32:57]:

You know, one of the things that the angels have been bringing in recently is I’ve been talking to my clients and it kind of fits what we, what you were saying, Tommy. Jealousy really isn’t jealousy, but you have certain wants or things that you’re jealous of. And when you really look at those, they’re often in reverse. Our goals and the things that we’re manifesting, I don’t find that those change very often. Like things that spirit places within your heart most often aren’t things, they’re experiences, their self growth experiences that your soul wants to participate in. Yeah, I think that that’s really, really fascinating. What you thing.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:33:40]:

Yeah, you’re trying, you’re getting into something. I know, I’ve read some of your website and all the beautiful words in there and intuition is something you help people focus on, but that’s your intuition. That’s your sense of knowing, right? And it comes in a form of insights. And it comes in. It comes though. It’s like energy that comes to you when you need it, when you ask for it. And again, these other. So I think what you started there with is in the book.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:34:07]:

The book is set up that we have a little bit of an awareness, okay? You’re aware now that you have fears. Now we understand. The second part is understanding. There’s awareness and then there’s understanding, a good part of the book. And at the end, we give an experience, so something that you can actually do, whether it’s an exercise or a meditation, to actually experience what it’s like to have less fear, for example, or to have fewer desires. So one of the things is to put on all the stuff in the desire realm, all the things you think you want, all the things you think you need, right? A list, Write a list, and then you look at it, and at some point you destroy that list. But what’s left is what you’re saying. We have true purpose.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:34:50]:

We have true things that may sound like a desire, and those will stay. Those will not burn in the fire. It’s all the miscellaneous stuff that you pick up from elsewhere that you need to drop. And when you do that, less chatter, quieter head. You let go of fears, less chatter, quieter head. Now, on your chatter scale, which you can go take on a stress survey on offroad monks.com in about two minutes, you can see where you are on the chatter scale, on the stress scale. And immediately by reading the book and doing an exercise, you have less noise in your head. So you’re lower on that chatter score.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:35:24]:

You’re closer to the green zone. And that’s the way the book is designed for you to be able to let go of the noise that’s blocking your. Your energy. So the third one is, okay, I’m safe, I’m content, and I’m kind of confident as a being, as a spiritual being here on planet Earth right now. I’m pretty confident. Not in an arrogant way, right? But in a. In a. In a solid, connected.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:35:53]:

I’m part of all this. I’m vibrating energy inside myself. It’s vibrating in harmony with, you know, the higher vibration that I know is here. And there’s a degree of strength and courage in that, right? I think of the lion in Dorothy, right? Courage. And so here I’m talking about this one a lot because this is my nemesis. This was my kryptonite. Because what corrupts or encapsulates or diminishes that courage is worrying. Worrying about stuff.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:36:26]:

And I was a worry at that. What put me in the hospital. Consummate worrying. And I was a good worrier. I was a strong worrier. I could worry about a lot of stuff. I was pretty proud of my worry, my stack of worries. Right.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:36:36]:

And the book just helps you understand what worry is, what worry isn’t. Logically can look at worry from an objective standpoint and go, oh, so worry isn’t just part of being an adult. I had somebody tell me that once. Worry is just part of being an adult. I’m thinking, no, so. So that’s the third one. And I don’t know, Bryan, if you have anything to add into either desire or. Or worry.

Bryan Bernard [00:36:58]:

Well, desire, we help the reader figure out their desires from other people’s desires because it’s so easy to pick up other people’s desires. You know, are you wanting to get married because your parents are pressuring you to get married and it’s expected, or do you really want to get married? Are you, you know, wanting to have children because it’s, you know, pressure is being put on you because somebody wants grandkids or it’s just what women do. You know, is it. Is it that, or do you really want children? Are you taking that job because you’re trying to live up to some expectation from your father, or do you really want that job? So we just help people look at that so they can make a choice in their life that’s in alignment with their inner sage.

Julie Jancis [00:37:39]:

And how do you do that? You know, like, because it was just with me when I was younger. I’ve told this story on the podcast where I went to Cast Catholic school, and the nuns in third grade were like, what are you? What do you want to be when you grow up? And it’s like, I want to be a priest. Well, you have to be a man. Okay, well, then I guess I’ll be a nun. Well, then you can’t have a family. And I knew in that instant when they said it, I just could get a vision of myself one day having children. And I knew that I wanted a partner. I knew that I wanted kids.

Julie Jancis [00:38:10]:

And it’s like, okay, well, then I guess I’m not working for God. I don’t know what other jobs are out there. How do you know when it is just something that you truly desire? Because that’s just always been innate for me. I’ve always had those visions. I’ve always just had that knowingness. But how does it work for everybody else.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:38:34]:

So two answers. One is when you burn, you make a list of all your desires. I want to serve God and I want to have a family. And you have it all in there. You burn the whole freaking list. What’s left? When your head, that stuff that’s imagined, the stuff that’s been added into your head will go up in flames. But the stuff that’s real in you, your knowing, is in there again. Your intuition will bring that up again.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:39:03]:

Because I’ve gone through several cycles of this in my last 20 years. I’ve burned everything, like, metaphorically, like, left it all behind. I don’t even want to teach anymore. I don’t want to tell anybody about these chakras, these energy centers. Forget it all. And I sit there and then pretty soon I’m back up doing just those things. And I’m not collecting a bunch of other stuff or trying to climb the corporate ladder anymore. And I’m not trying to do these other things that were imposed upon me.

Bryan Bernard [00:39:29]:

The things that really matter to you won’t leave you alone, right? If you sit and do deep meditation or deep prayer, have a conversation with Gus, God, universe, Source, you know, whatever works for you. Go inside, find your inner sage, your inner angel, and have that conversation and look at that list that you would have written down of all these different things and maybe chuck it all aside and then pay attention. Because what matters to you is not going to leave. It’s going to keep coming back. And if you have a calling like that, it behooves you to head in that direction. Humans are aiming creatures, and we are the most content and happy when we are moving towards a goal that matters to us and we see that we’re making progress.

Julie Jancis [00:40:16]:

Yeah, a hundred percent. And I often find that people want to know what they’re getting into before they start heading down that path. And it’s like, like, no, you have to start on that path towards the direction of where your heart’s calling you. Because as you do and you start turning over rocks and peeling back layers, spirit is able to bring in more. But if you just stay in the same place, you just keep getting more of the same and keep asking the same question. But they are showing you a next first step. And when you take that, it opens you to a whole new world. I often think of it like that dog butler statue that they have at some restaurants.

Julie Jancis [00:40:53]:

Like when you’re leaving and it’s got the mints on it. The intuition feels a lot like that to me. That if it’s really meant for you. It’s just there on a platter. And the answer doesn’t change. Whether you’re 5 or 25 or 55 years old, what you love keeps coming back around and. And it’s just there for. For you to go into.

Julie Jancis [00:41:18]:

I love this, guys. This is so awesome.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:41:24]:

I’ll hold in that for a second because there’s another layer to this that you’re both talking about that’s good to understand. Less chatter comes, less interference comes a greater ability to hear answers to your asks. Right? To hear your intuition, to hear your angels. And this is the Green Zone. We get into a Green Zone, we show people what a Green Zone experience is like. We all have them. But it’s good to be reminded once in a while of what it feels like to be in the Green Zone Zone.

Julie Jancis [00:41:51]:

Yeah.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:41:51]:

You don’t have to go from a red Zoner to a green Zoner instantly, but to have some Green Zone experiences in your life to relate to. Come jeeping with us and we’ll give you one very quiet, peaceful, mindful out in nature, you know, intense green. Green Zone experience. But that green Zone is. Is a quieter inside. It’s a stillness inside. It’s the calm inside. It’s what everybody, you know, what we are supposed to be meditating for, right? And it’s a reason why people can’t meditate.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:42:20]:

I can’t meditate. My head’s too noisy. Right? Chatter. Have some. Understand what it is. Get some out of the way and have places you can go to that you can be in that Green Zone. So you can hear the guidance that’s coming. You can sense it, you can feel it.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:42:33]:

Right? That. That’s true. Right?

Julie Jancis [00:42:35]:

So I think we’re on number three, and we might have. Or number four, which one was confident, might have time for one more.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:42:44]:

The fourth one. The fourth one. You know, you’re safe, you’re content, you’re kind of confident. Now you can engage the universe too, right? From a peaceful place. And. And I’m doing this with my hand, moving my hands in and out, kind of showing an energetic connection. That’s our love, right? That’s our energy of flow. That’s our connectedness between each other.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:43:03]:

That’s the energy. Your energy, I’m energy. And we can connect energetically in a peaceful, loving way. So that’s the. The. That’s our fourth, and that’s the heart center. You know, people talk about the heart center. That’s our heart center.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:43:16]:

And that gets locked up by being needy by feeling like we aren’t loved or we need love, or we were unplugged from love, or we’re disconnected from things and we get like, needy, like we have to have. We get desperate. That chapter is pretty interesting. There’s a lot of introspection in that one. To see how, you know, how our understanding or misunderstanding, maybe of even love. We talk about conditional love. Love. Conditional love’s on the box side.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:43:42]:

I love you because you’re behaving. I love you because you’re a good boy. I love you. And while that’s never the intention, a little kid gets confused in a hurry. Well, do you love me? Love you not. Love me, love me not. You approve of me, don’t approve of me. And we get confused.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:43:57]:

Approval and love. And that’s the box that kind of mucks up our energy, our heart center energy. The fifth one you’ve already touched upon because it has a flavor of the second one in Desires. But the fifth one Bryan touched upon earlier, it gets into this comparison game that we get into very early in this society. You’re getting grades, you’re stacking up against somebody else. You’re better than, you’re less than, you’re richer than, you’re poorer than, you’re smarter than, you’re whatever. All these comparisons, that is every one of those comparisons that we have about ourself. And then we get good at if our comparisons and many judgments of us as a young child, we start to be good at manifesting those amongst ourselves.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:44:42]:

Like if somebody’s telling us that you’re not good, then we’ll start saying I’m not good. And then you take it off upon yourself and all those things are chatter. So we help you understand where that comes from. You can write it down again, you can make it a little more objective and do some things of letting go. Some of that comparison that turns into jealousy, that turns into envy, that turns into this. The sixth one is it turns into separation. We get in our heads. Now we’re number six here.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:45:10]:

Number six. So number number five is authenticity. When we’re not blocked up by comparison to somebody else. We’re authentic. We’re our authentic self. And we hear a lot of talk about that. So this explains how to become your authentic self. How to get back in touch with your higher self, with your true self, with your inner sage.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:45:27]:

So I’m just rattling through these last two kind of quickly. Six then is like a cul. And six is our I’m over here, you’re over there, I’M separate from you, I’m different from you. I have conflict with you because you don’t think the way I do. It’s. It’s this. It becomes the ego mind some people call it, right? That sense of separation that I’m better than or I’m worse than. It kind of parlays into this mindset that turns into this kind of taker mindset.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:45:55]:

Like me first you go back to the Buddha. The Buddha said this. The entire source of all man made suffering on planet Earth is this. He called it self cherishing. That’s how it’s been interpreted down over the ages. I’m more important than you. Me first, right? And we see a lot of behaviors like this and we can see people behaving this way and that can turn into some nasty behaviors like narcissism and dictatorship and all sorts of other weird mindsets. But it’s a sense of separation.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:46:27]:

Stacked on top of all these other fears is a pretty crippling mindset. When we learn what that is, again the logic of it and we do some exercises in the book to let go of it. What’s. There is a sense of connectedness. Now you’re. Now you’re. Now you can sense. Now your third eye is awake.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:46:44]:

And now you can sense the energy of a situation. Now you know that we’re all the same energy. We’re all the same vibration just vibrating at different frequencies. And there’s no judgment in there anymore because everyone’s stuck in this game, in this rat race and they’re all behaving as they were conditioned to behave. And nobody’s lacking love because we all love. And this vibration that we are is a loving energy of vibration standing in an energy of confidence that is pretty content and pretty connected to everything else. Now you can live in the seventh kind of arena of being fulfilled, of being okay, of being content, loving, you know, not separate all one. This oneness concept all comes in at number seven at that point.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:47:24]:

Point. Whereas if, if you’re all blocked up all the way up the way, then you’re kind of living in a world of despair. Like nothing ever goes my way. Nothing’s right. Nobody likes me. You know, you can stack up all the voices, right? All that chatter. You can see the boxes how they can check, stack up pretty fast and make somebody’s life pretty miserable. We’re just a couple guys who have been miserable and we didn’t want to be anymore.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:47:49]:

So we’ve found ways and we, we simplified it as best we can and we joke about it by taking people jeeping and we help people realize and remember that bright brilliant energy that’s inside of themselves. And just the, just the society around us that’s, that’s blocked all that up and, and just ways to that we found shortcuts, we found from ancient texts, from ancient teachers, from new teachers, from you know, asking questions and getting our guidance and our intuition. And it all just comes into this 250something pages in the form of this green, yellow, red stoplight chart that people can relate to and understand. It makes sense. Oh yeah. Huh. I can see and it’s pretty. It’s a kind of no brainer at some point to say, all right, I have no more excuses.

Tommy Stuffel  [00:48:39]:

Now it’s time to like do the work. Because we can’t do that for you, as Bryan said. Right. We can’t tell you what your specific chatter is.

Julie Jancis [00:48:48]:

Don’t you want to though? Sometimes there’s, sometimes you just want to hop into your clients bodies and just be able to tweak things and move it around because that would be so much easier. But I totally get it. We can’t. I love this concept that you guys have created. It’s just beautiful. Your book is called Take the Wheel. Bryan, is there any last thing that you want to say? And then I’d love to give you both the opportunity to tell everybody where they can find you and your work.

Bryan Bernard [00:49:15]:

I just want to thank Tommy for being a very dear friend and, and help him come pull me out of a very dark place and giving me the opportunity to help him create this book. I didn’t realize how many people really kind of need this to figure out what’s blocking them from living the life that they really want to live. And once they start clearing their particular stuff out of the way to see them now living in alignment with their true selves, it’s just so inspiring to see them free now from these imagined shackles that they’ve been carrying around down the boulders that they’re in their backpack of life that are just been weighing them down. And to see them set those on the side of the trail and move forward and not look back at that, it’s just very inspiring. I’m so grateful to be able to do this.

Julie Jancis [00:50:00]:

Yay. That’s so beautiful. And where can everybody find you and your work?

Bryan Bernard [00:50:04]:

Well, the book is for sale wherever books are being sold, of course, Amazon.com and barnes and Noble and other other places like that. And they can go to our website, off road monks dot com. I think there’s links there to take you to buy the book. There’s also the stress survey. I would encourage people to go there. Just take that. Doesn’t cost anything. Just answer the 10 questions.

Bryan Bernard [00:50:24]:

You’re going to instantly get your score of where you are. And just that right there can be pretty eye opening. Maybe you’re already in the green zone. Awesome. That’d be great. But maybe you’re up there pretty high in the yellow zone and you bounce up into the red zone when somebody cuts you off in traffic or your boss says something not so nice. So yeah, I would encourage people to do that.

Julie Jancis [00:50:45]:

Thank you guys so much for being you and going through your journeys in order to inspire others. It’s such a great story and wonderful book. Thank you so much for all that you’re doing for the world.
