I did what I had done before and turned to Google. In desperation, I typed into the search bar: What does it mean when you achieve something major but feel nothing? The first result resonated. It said, “Yes, I think I am unhappy,” and I realized that I was. I had achieved so much, but my entire life—up to age 37—had been about moving from one goal to the next, always chasing the idea that “if you just do this one thing, you’ll finally be happy.”
I reached a point where my life was perfect on the outside. I had everything I thought I wanted, yet I felt nothing. That’s when I realized my perfect life was broken. The journey I’ve been on, and the book I’ve written, are all about that experience. What does it mean when your life appears perfect but is broken? How do you rebuild from the inside out, reflecting who you really are? For me, I didn’t even know who I was or what I truly wanted because I had never been given the opportunity to explore that.

I love this so much—it’s beautiful. I know many women listening feel the same way. It’s a common story. Some of us grew up in affluent families or had more privilege, yet still found ourselves in survival mode. Middle school, high school, and even into adulthood, we feel pressure to achieve and carve out a space for ourselves. Then, in your 30s or beyond, after you’ve done all the “right” things, this deep, daunting feeling surfaces. “Is this it? What now?” It feels like falling into an abyss.
For those who haven’t yet traveled this path, it can feel overwhelming. I’ve worked with women in their 60s and 70s—even an 85-year-old woman—who came to me saying, “I want to live my own life, even if I only have a few years left.” These feelings are universal and deeply personal.
Ashley Jordan: I want to say that this wasn’t something I expected. I was so focused on living my life and checking off boxes that I ignored the connection to my heart. I only lived in my head. When someone asked, “What does your heart want?” it felt foreign—like just something people say. Reconnecting with my heart was the first step, and it was hard. But that’s the journey: coming back to ourselves, to the person we were born to be.
This journey looks different for everyone. My choices won’t match anyone else’s. The key is listening to our intuition and following our inner wisdom. It’s not about prescription or perfection; it’s about being truthful with yourself and finding your path.
Julie Jancius: That’s exactly it—intuition and following your heart. When you’re aligned with your soul’s path, you feel a sense of fulfillment that can’t be bought. But often, there’s a wake-up call that forces you to confront the misalignment. For you, was the grief of losing your friend Daniel one of those moments?
Ashley Jordan: Yes. My ex-husband is an amazing man, and he did the best he could to support me, but when I brought up Daniel’s passing, it was completely new to him. I hadn’t shared that pain before, so when it resurfaced, it cracked me open. Grief is profound. It can hit you decades later and still feel as raw as the day it happened. For me, it took years of processing and walking through that pain to truly heal. It’s soul-level loss, and it forces you to the depths of yourself.
Julie Jancius: Let’s talk about Daniel a bit more. So many people experience grief but don’t realize how long it can linger. For some, it takes years—sometimes decades—to process fully. You lost Daniel when you were young, but it resurfaced for you 24 years later. How did you know it was time to face that grief? How did you begin to heal?
Ashley Jordan: It started with an unexpected trigger. It felt like it had happened yesterday, even though years had passed. I kept asking myself, “What is wrong with me?” But grief isn’t linear. It’s devastating and transformative. Looking back, I’m grateful for the pain because it forced me to grow and connect with parts of myself I had buried.
